蜡染工艺，古称“蜡缬”是我国传统的民间印染工艺。汉代已有，唐代盛行，距今已有一二千年历史，今在布依、苗、仡佬族中仍盛行。贵州省聚居着这些民族，亦是蜡染工艺较发达的地方。蜡染工艺是用蜡刀蘸蜡液在布上绘出所需图形，浸入靛缸染色（以兰色为主，亦可染其他色）反复多次染漂，后用热水脱蜡即现花纹。其结构严谨，线条清晰流畅，可画较复杂的图形，装饰趣味性强，具有鲜明的民族风格。高原特色。

是苗族妇女用蜡刀手工绘制蜡染作品染前的蜡版，前面的盆内小碗里是蜡液。真正的蜡染画**是这样手工绘制后再经多次漂染脱蜡而成的。现在已有印制而成的“蜡染”作品，它没有手工制作的真品细腻自然，特别是蜡裂（即在多次染漂过程中蜡版局部断裂浸入染料后，形成的染纹），没有手工工艺的自然流畅。
 Batik craft was called “laji” in the ancient time. It is a traditional folk craft of paint and dye in China. It appeared in the Han dynasty and was in vogue in the Tang dynasty, having its history for about 1200 years. Now, it is still in vogue in the Buyi, Miao and Gelao nationalities. Those nationalities live in compact communities in Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, and then the plateau is a place where the batik is considerably prosperous. The batik method is drawing graphs by wax liquid and wax knife on the cotton cloth, and soaking the cloth in indigo dyeing vat (mainly blue, but also can be other colors) to dye it repeatedly, and finally taking off the wax by hot water to get the required pattern. The structure of the patterns is made conscientious and careful, and the lines are clear and smooth. The graphs can be quite complicated and the batik articles can be very decorative and interesting, showing the nationality style vividly. 

These are the plates for Miao women to draw the patterns of batiks by hand. In front, there is wax liquid in the small bowl in the basin. The real batik articles are made in this way—drawing by hand and dyeing repeatedly, then taking off the wax. Now, there are some “ batiks” made by printing. It is not as fine and natural as the hand made ones. Especially, there “wax cracks” are not as easy and smooth as the real batiks.
